Prelim Task

This is the Prelim task that we have to present as part of the coursework. We were given a set brief to follow and had certain techniques that we had to display.

We will be analysing the success of this task as part of the evaluation, but have added initial comments so that we don't forget our first reactions.

  1. When watching our prelim task I noticed that there we were several improvements that could have been made. They were mainly due to the way that it was edited. We can see that there is a slight miss match, in the match on action at the beginning when I walk through the door and then the camera angle changes and it is not progressing from where I left of. Another part of the match on action I left the frame and all you could see was the hood on my coat, it would have been on effective if I hadn’t have left the frame completely, this again is due to editing issues. When filming the over the shoulder shot from my perspective I moved so where the camera was place it did not look like an over the shoulder shot. When editing we should have considered using audio wave in order to get rid of the wild sound that can be heard by the other classes. This would have shown more clarity and attention to detail. Another point about filming the camera seems to be tilted slightly so we need to get used to balancing the tripod so that it is level and not slightly tilted to look like a canted angle.

  2. After watching our prelim task back, I noticed there are quite a few points where next time we could improve on. To start with our attempt at camera angles were good but obviously when editing we didn’t match up the action as well as we could have as we see Hanisha slightly off point as for example at the start when she walks through the door the camera angle change does not start from where the last camera angle was which means that Hanisha was slightly more forward than what she should have been. Another improvement that we could work on is to not have the actors leaving the frame to then switch the camera angles as this is not good camera work. The room that we chose to film with appeared to be well lit but when we came to edit the film we noticed that one side of the room was significantly brighter than the other which made the whole film look strange as if the two sides of the room did not belong to each other.

  3. We had problems with continuity - the lighting changed as we took different over the shoulder shots. The problem was backlighting - the camera was pointed straight at the light source, therefore making most of the scene dark. We will improve this by constantly checking the light exposure through the camera or to get rid of natural lighting and use indoor artificial lighting instead. Another problem was the composition, when we filmed the over the shoulder shots, we should have made full use of the frame instead of having both subjects compressed to one side.

  4. When we watched this task back, I discovered that it wasn't exactly perfect. To start with, our camera angles were good but when it came to editing, we discovered that the 'over the shoulder' shots were different to each other which made it a bit unrealistic. I also noticed that the lighting in our task changed slightly meaning that it wasn't the same which didn't make it a proper and professional match on action. We also had some problems with our tripod. We were unable to get the right balance on it which made it come across as canted angle shots when that wasn't the look we were going for. The sound wasn't great either as there is wild sound in the background which also makes it quite unprofessional. The editing at the end isn't very good either because it is a repeat of what has happened and doesn't exactly make sense.
