Film a conversation using:
Establishing shot that zooms in
Panning shot to show character 2’s arrival
Shot / reverse shot not equal distance representing one character as less prominent / lower status
Arc shot / 360 shot – character 2’s reactions to dramatic news
Tracking shot as character 2 runs off.
Objective: to practise camera movements and evaluate technical issues around them / pros and cons for their use.
We were set this task because our original storyboard contained many camera movements. In particular, we had planned a lot of tracking shots to follow the younger sister round the house as she plays hide and seek. This task was useful because it has helped us see how difficult it is to work with a moving camera when you do not have the specialist equipment. Eliminating unwanted movement / shakiness is really hard. Even zooms require a lot of practise and a steady hand, and with panning shots you need to start from the end point and work backwards a few times so that you know where the camera is going to end up. This task has made us consider alternative shots with less movement so that we have time when filming to do many takes of the shots we decide do require movement.
The establishing shot of the room could have been a lot smoother. The way that you could have done this is by loosening the handle on the tripod. This would have given us a smoother movement; also this was the first time that we had filmed an establishing shot. However the continuity of Georgina putting her hand into her pocket, from the editing is a lot better than our prelim task. The reason for this is because we noticed our mistake and then improved on it in this camera movement task, in this task the continuity matches up and falls into place. However when it comes to the conversation we had problems when editing because Shannon had stood in a different place to where she walked in so therefore it looked a little bit out of position, this also shows that we need to keep the camera in the same place so that the continuity when editing fits perfectly to make it look like on scene and not all cut up. During the conversation we used a subtle zoom to make the audience feel emotion towards the sympathetic character. The main part of this task that we could have improved is the tracking shot. We could have put the camera on something with wheels in order for it to be smooth and follow Georgina out of the room. However a much better improvement than our prelim task.

We did make some improvements to the task although there is some parts that could still be improved. Firstly, the camera work for the establishing shot of the room was very shaky which can be quite off putting to the audience. This could e done by loosening the handle of the tripod. There is also a lot of wild sound which could have been edited out. Although the close up of Georgina's are well filmed because it shows the audience who the main character is. There isn't much continuity when I walk in however because my speech is cut showing and I move from completely different position with no smooth transition ad this shows that there has been editing. After this the over the should shot is very good because it shows Georgina's face clear and there is good shot reverse shot because both of our expressions can be seen clearly. The camera work is also effective when Georgina gets up and goes because the audience can see exactly where she goes and the sound isn't muffled. Overall, this is a much better improvement that our other preliminary task.

The establishing shot of the room wasn’t as smoothed as we had hoped and the camera stopped and started when it was turning. The establishing shot also met a wall and then went back on itself which doesn’t look good. To improve this, loosening the handle on the tripod would have made it easier to create that smoother shot. We also hear the clicking of buttons on the camera which we could help remove next time filming. The next scene shows our improvements with continuity. Our editing of my hand in and out of the pocket was a challenge for our group yet we managed to do it and keep the continuity flowing as in our prelim task this was one of our downfalls. We managed to film a shot reverse shot and made me be the vulnerable one by having a subtle zoom when I was talking. I thought this was done well and the angle that we saw Shannon in worked well. An improvement for our next task would be to make sure that whoever will act will know their lines well before filming so that when filming from different angles we can keep the continuity at all times.
